The World’s Next Genocide?

There are over 7 billion people in our world today. Our world is filled with billions of people who all believe in different things, causing lots of conflict to arise. In Catholic Social Teaching we have learned about the themes of CST and how we can use them everyday. In Syria, the Alawties are being attacked for their beliefs, just like the Tutsi’s were being attacked for their beliefs during the Rwanda genocide. As an international community, we must respond and reach out to help the Alawtis. We need to remember what happened during the Rwanda genocide, and not let that happen again.

The international community must respond to the current situation in Syria. We need to put an end to all the crimes that are going on. People cannot continuously get away with their terrible actions, and keep harming those around them. We need to make Syria a safe place, where people are treated equally and certain groups are not looked down on. With the help of CST, we can do this.

It is realistic and possible to use CST to guide our decisions as individuals and as a nation. The themes and principles of CST apply to everyone around the world, no matter what religion they are. A few themes that relate directly to Syria are Call to Family, Community, and Participation, Option for the Poor and Vulnerable, Solidarity, and Caring for God's Creation. If everyone knew about these themes and practiced them, I think that the world would be a much better place.
